Would You?

In the great state of Massachusetts like any other state there are the homeless. I don't dislike the homeless but they do give you something to think about and to laugh about. Like so many intersections there are postings indicating that panhandling is not right, give to a charity, etc., however like so many homeless those posting are ignored and they go about their business, literally. As I cross the intersection to get gas I notice that the typical homeless guy I'll call Frank, has returned after the winter. As I'm pumping gas I turn around to watch Frank only because I can't believe that to this day people will still give to panhandlers despite the appearance. I mention appearance because typically speaking one would assume that if your homeless you've not nothing--right, WRONG. Frank as I remember him from 6 months ago, had the limp in the walk, scruffy hair, dirty cloths and shoes, however not so today. As I watch him with his card board sign I've noticed bright white shoes, newish clean cloths and a sparkling new haircut. I wonder how much he will make today, will he ever be close to resolving his situation, or does he just do this as a 'part time' job? Then he swoops down for his Dunkin Donuts coffee--SERIOUSLY? No kidding this guy no longer looks or acts like the typical homeless but is still praying on the generosity of others. All I could do was chuckle and shake my head. I go about my business, an hour later i'm at the same intersection on my way home. Yep, Frank is still there and no lie someone rolls down the window and gives him money. Really! It was slightly insane to watch. Perhaps the people didn't really know Frank from last year where I have to admit he at least looked the part and maybe they didn't get the chance to see the sparkly new white sneakers. Not to be a complete heartless person, perhaps the sneakers came from an agency for the homeless but from what I witnessed I'm guessing he just hasn't gotten scruffy yet for the year. What did it for me was the Dunkin Donuts coffee. Its the same as giving to someone that is smoking. I will never forget the sign that I saw when I was returning from a baseball game in Seattle, WA. which read: "Why lie I need money for Beer". At least that individual was being honest and didn't care to add fluff about being in the army or having lost everything. He was completely happy with being homeless if he had liquor. Would you have given to Frank? How well do panhandlers do in a year? How does one justify accepting donations from others and then using it on non essentail items? Hows does all that work out in the head?
